Crafting with no plan

It's starting to feel like we've finally hit our stride here in the TFA household. I think that I have written countless blog posts about trying to find balance, working less, playing more, trying to not always rush and look ahead but rather live in the moment! For years I was unable to get it right, I never felt completely at ease. But I think that now I do. Of course there will never be enough hours in the day and I will always be planning for the future and thinking about what lies ahead, but truly and sincerely, I really feel very good with how our life is playing out right now and I hope that you all feel the same because seriously, it's awesome. Peaceful.

I mentioned feeling this way in a post back in January when we were all excited about what 2014 would hold. I think the proof of our more well rounded lifestyle these days can be seen (a bit) in my instagram feed. Some photo's from the past few weeks prove that I've been painting, weaving knitting and re-decorating! What a thrill. I wish that I was doing a bit more sewing, but am perfectly happy working on whatever I can, whenever I can. At the moment I'm still on a weaving high from last weekend's workshop, so I've spent a few evenings working on that, but last week I was in a watercolour mood... so watercolour I did!

Yarn from Yartini's "Create Your Own" self striping sock yarn club. I picked 4 colours and she made the yarn! I have 2 other skeins in different combo's. Very fun.

Of course knitting will always be my #1 craft, even if it just means plucking away at a few rounds on a sock here and there. Before I knew it I had a finished sock! I am 100% convinced that playing around in other mediums like painting and weaving will contribute to make me a better knitter, designer and dyer. There is nothing like a change of scenery to give a fresh perspective. My recent weaving kick has made me think about yarn and colour in a new way, right away that gives me new ideas for dyeing and the next logical step my brain takes is to start thinking about knitting again.

I used to feel like knitting was my spouse. I was married to knitting and working in other mediums was like cheating. We are so hard on ourselves sometimes aren't we? It's silly really.

So, I hope you all have a fun summer playing with whatever creative medium feels right for you at any given moment. And just because today's post is made up of photo's from my instagram feed here is a parting collage of Rowan experiencing a big rain storm for the first time. He loved it and now we run the shower for him while he's in the bath. This is going to be the best summer!

ps: if you aren't on instagram but want to check out the TFA instagram feed - fear not! You can stay in the loop by going to this instagram tab I've added on the TFA facebook page. It's very cool.
