I'm definitely a "better late than never" gift giver. I like to surprise people by making them think that I've completely forgotten their birthday and then, BAM! weeks late I send a gift! Ok, it's definitely not always the way I plan it, but more often then not it seems to be the way things end up. What can ya do?
For my littlest nieces first birthday I knit this adorable little shrug. Her mother loves ballet so the style and the name (“entrechat,” a ballet jump where the legs cross each other mid-air in a flutter - from the pattern page) feels totally appropriate. The other really special thing about this wee shrug is the button. My sister in law's mother is a ceramic artist and gifted me these beautiful hand made ceramic buttons for Christmas. I was thrilled to discover that I could use one on this project, it's such a sweet touch that I think both mom and grandma will appreciate.
The pattern is flawless. Knit in one piece from the top down with the sweetest little details. The 12-18 month size used less than 1 skein of aran weight yarn and took about the same amount of time to make as a hat. Two casual evenings of knitting (I bet you could crank out a smaller size in 1 night). I didn't know that I was so into shrugs for little girls, but I'm smitten. I can picture this being worn over a cute top with a denim skirt, wouldn't that be adorable? I'm thinking of making this next for my other nieces birthday.
